The Trials and Tribulations of K-pop song covering

Covering a music video is a lot of hard work, especially with all the issues my group and I faced along the way. When beginning this project, we had all collectively sought out to perform a dance cover, however, due to conflicting schedules, a lack of coordination and time management, and on my part, an injury, we had to submit to the next best option: a song cover. The song we chose was ‘And July’ by Heize feat. Dean, a song that we saw as a possibility for a challenging yet doable performance. Truthfully, I was a bit disappointed in not being able to do a dance cover, and because I hurt my foot after we decided on what we were doing I feel as if I was not much of a help to the group as a whole and that I may have contributed a bit into my group and I having to switch to a song cover instead of what we originally planned.

The covering process was hectic from the get-go. After figuring out who could do what, we quickly tried to dive into the scheduling process for filming. I was given the job of co-filming, co-directing, styling, and set design. Our first filming session went from around 6 p.m. to around 1 a.m. which took a large toll on everyone, as we quickly learned that the filming and acting process is exhausting on the mind and body. The second session we met up for we were given a strict time frame in order to get the rest of the video shot at our location. Overall, I do believe that the video came out as best as it could even with our unqualified video-graphing and acting skills.

I learned a lot from this experience, such as how much patience it takes to be able to film a music video and having to continually move around and re-shoot footage in different ways to get the best shot. I feel as if this project has allowed me to gain more respect for not only the artists but the directors and staff behind the scenes as well.
